FRAMEWORKS & INTERNATIONAL EQUIVALENCY CREDIT

Cadres de crédits et équivalences internationales

Juneteenth Intercontinental University (JIU) employs a credit-hour system aligned with North American standards while ensuring full comparability and transferability with the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) and other international qualification frameworks.

JIU’s credit framework is designed to support academic mobility, international recognition, and equitable access for learners across developing and developed regions.

1. Definition of the Academic Credit

1. Définition du crédit académique

North American Credit Hour (JIU Standard)
One (1) academic credit represents approximately 45 hours of total student learning effort, inclusive of:

  • Direct instruction (lectures, seminars, labs)

  • Guided practice or clinical activities

  • Independent study, reading, research, and assessment preparation

2. ECTS Credit Definition

2. Définition du crédit ECTS

Under the Bologna Process, one (1) ECTS credit corresponds to 25–30 hours of total student workload. A standard full-time academic year equals 60 ECTS credits.

Dans le cadre du Processus de Bologne, un (1) crédit ECTS correspond à 25 à 30 heures de charge de travail étudiante. Une année universitaire à temps plein équivaut à 60 crédits ECTS.

3. Credit Conversion Standard (JIU Policy)

3. Norme de conversion des crédits (politique JIU)

For international equivalency and transfer evaluation purposes, JIU applies the following official conversion standard:

1 North American credit (JIU) = 2 ECTS credits
1 ECTS credit = 0.5 North American credit

Cette norme est utilisée pour :

  • La reconnaissance internationale des diplômes

  • Les ententes de mobilité académique

  • L’évaluation des crédits de transfert

4. Credit Conversion Table

4. Tableau de conversion des crédits

5. Clinical, Practicum, and Field-Based Credits

5. Crédits cliniques, pratiques et communautaires

Programs requiring clinical practice, teaching practica, internships, laboratories, or community-embedded learning may apply enhanced workload ratios, consistent with professional and accreditation norms.

  • One (1) practicum or clinical credit typically represents 45–75 hours of supervised activity.

  • Credit valuation is determined by learning outcomes, competency demonstration, and regulatory requirements.

Les programmes comportant des stages cliniques, pédagogiques ou communautaires appliquent des ratios adaptés selon :

  • Les compétences professionnelles attendues

  • Les normes d’agrément

  • Les exigences réglementaires locales et internationales

6. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL/RAC)

6. Reconnaissance des acquis (RPL/RAC)

JIU recognizes prior learning acquired through:

  • Professional experience

  • Community leadership

  • Military, humanitarian, or faith-based service

  • Informal and non-formal education

Credits awarded through RPL/RAC are equivalent in academic value to earned credits and are reflected accordingly in both North American and ECTS frameworks.

7. Authority and Oversight

7. Autorité et supervision

The Office of the Registrar, in consultation with Academic Deans and Accreditation Liaison Officers, holds authority for:

  • Credit determination and conversion

  • Transfer credit evaluation

  • International equivalency certification

Final credit recognition decisions are documented and auditable for accreditation purposes.

8. International Alignment Statement

8. Déclaration d’alignement international

JIU’s credit framework aligns with:

  • The Bologna Process (ECTS)

  • The U.S. Credit Hour Definition

  • The Canadian Degree Qualifications Framework (CDQF)

  • The African Continental Qualifications Framework (ACQF)

This alignment ensures that JIU credentials are designed for global portability, recognition, and lifelong learning pathways.
